Classroom learning and lab practice provide essential foundations, but nothing replaces the experience of applying clinical skills with actual patients in real healthcare settings. Healthcare Training Academy partners with hospitals, physician offices, dental practices, pharmacies, and long-term care facilities throughout North Central West Virginia to provide externship opportunities where students transition from learners to practicing healthcare professionals.

Why Externships Are Essential for Healthcare Training

Medical training requires hands-on practice with diverse patient populations and healthcare situations that cannot be replicated in classroom settings. Externships provide the bridge between academic learning and professional competence, allowing students to apply clinical skills and medical procedures while receiving guidance from experienced healthcare professionals.

During externships, students encounter the complexities of actual patient care—anxious patients, challenging procedures, time pressures, equipment malfunctions, and the need for quick thinking. These experiences build confidence, refine techniques, and develop the clinical judgment essential for healthcare careers.

Externships also provide critical exposure to workplace culture and professional expectations. Students learn to function as team members, communicate with diverse healthcare professionals, maintain professionalism under stress, and manage competing demands. These soft skills are as important as clinical competencies for employment success.

The networking opportunities during externships often prove invaluable. Many our academy students receive job offers from their externship sites. Even students who ultimately work elsewhere benefit from professional references, mentorship relationships, and connections developed during clinical placements.

Our Extensive Network of Healthcare Partners

Healthcare Training Academy has cultivated partnerships with healthcare facilities throughout North Central West Virginia over nearly five decades. These relationships ensure students have access to quality externship sites that provide meaningful learning experiences.

Externship partners include regional hospitals where students gain experience with diverse patient populations and complex medical procedures, physician offices representing various specialties from family medicine to specialized practices, dental offices including general dentistry and orthodontic practices, retail and hospital pharmacies, long-term care facilities and nursing homes, outpatient surgical centers, and community health clinics.

This variety allows our academy to match students with sites that align with their career goals and learning needs. A student interested in pediatric medical assisting can complete externships in pediatric offices. Future pharmacy technicians interested in hospital pharmacy can pursue hospital externships. This customization enhances the educational value of clinical experiences.

What to Expect During Externships

Externship experiences vary by program and site, but all share common elements. Students work under supervision of licensed healthcare professionals, gradually assuming more responsibility as they demonstrate competence. Initial days often involve observation and orientation to site procedures. As students grow comfortable, they begin performing clinical skills independently while remaining under supervision.

Medical assistant externs participate in patient rooming, vital signs measurement, medical history documentation, assisting with examinations and medical procedures, performing laboratory tests, administering injections, EKG procedures, and patient education. They also gain experience with appointment scheduling, insurance verification, medical records management, and telephone triage.

Dental assistant externs practice chairside assisting during various dental procedures, dental radiography, instrument sterilization, patient education, appointment scheduling, and treatment documentation. They experience the pace and workflow of dental practices while refining clinical skills.

Pharmacy technician externs fill prescriptions, process insurance claims, compound medications, manage inventory, counsel patients on medication use, and learn pharmacy workflow and quality control procedures. Hospital pharmacy externs may gain experience with IV medication preparation and sterile compounding.

CNA externs provide direct patient care including bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding assistance, ambulation and transfers, vital signs monitoring, and communication with nursing staff. They experience the physical and emotional demands of patient care while developing time management and prioritization skills.

Phlebotomy externs perform venipunctures and capillary punctures on diverse patients, practice difficult draws under supervision, learn specimen processing and quality procedures, and develop speed and confidence in blood collection techniques.

Externship Preparation and Support

our academy prepares students thoroughly before externships begin. Preparation includes review of clinical skills and medical procedures, professionalism and workplace behavior expectations, externship policies and requirements, site-specific orientation, documentation and evaluation procedures, and professional appearance and conduct standards.

During externships, our academy instructors maintain contact with both students and site supervisors, providing support and addressing any issues that arise. Regular check-ins ensure students are meeting learning objectives and receiving quality supervision. This ongoing support helps students navigate challenges and maximize learning during clinical experiences.

Externship sites complete evaluation forms assessing student performance in clinical skills, professionalism, communication, and overall competence. This feedback helps students understand strengths and areas for improvement. Successful externship completion is required for program graduation and demonstrates readiness for healthcare employment.

From Externship to Employment

Many our academy graduates begin their healthcare careers at their externship sites. Healthcare employers value the opportunity to observe potential employees in action before making hiring decisions. Students who demonstrate strong clinical skills, professionalism, and positive attitudes during externships often receive job offers.

Even students who ultimately work elsewhere benefit tremendously from externship experiences. The clinical experience, professional references, and demonstrated competence make graduates competitive in the job market. Externship supervisors who were impressed with student performance are often happy to serve as references or make introductions to other employers.

The confidence gained through successfully completing externships is perhaps the most valuable outcome. Students who initially felt anxious about performing clinical skills with actual patients finish externships feeling capable and ready to begin their healthcare careers. This transformation from nervous student to confident healthcare professional is the goal of Our medical training programs.
